Iris Hantverk: Havtorn Soap 3D

This personal project explores the subtle colours, textures and interaction of light with a typical soap material. Our goal was to create images that feel realistic and tactile and tell the product's story in an appealing way. The project was modelled in Modo and rendered with Octane.
Tell your story with dynamic product animations
We are big fans of the Iris Hantverk brand and have created a couple of personal projects for it. Our soap design is based on a range they sell, but this Havtorn (Sea Buckthorn) variation is fictional. A dynamic product animation shows the different views and gives the customer a quick feel for it.
Our process is built on research and observation
The project starts with research and building a reference library of images showing the product from different perspectives under various lighting conditions. This is especially important if an actual sample is unavailable. Then we will discover or extrapolate the real-world scale and begin modelling. Once the model is optimised and UV mapped, we build up the materials, starting here with a base albedo, subsurface scattering, roughness, imperfections and detailed displacement and damage maps. Lastly, the image is rendered and then graded in Photoshop.
Flexible assets
We then compose a selection of shots and design lighting that help tell the product's story. This would typically include clean catalogue-style images for e-commerce and supportive imagery for additional use cases, such as websites and social media. A key point of difference to traditional photography is the speed and flexibility of asset generation. Clients often need us to revisit a project to add additional variations using the same lighting and compositions. All this can be achieved while a product is still in production.
